Affiliates around the country have been diligently serving their communities, their members, and the profession. The following summaries highlight Affiliate activities nationwide. Consider which events you could incorporate into your Affiliate’s initiatives and feel free to contact the sponsoring Affiliate for more information about a particular event or project. For Affiliates organizing great events, please forward any information or photos you have of your group’s activity. It may be selected for inclusion in the newsletter’s next issue.

Serving and Leading the Community

On July 9, 2013, the State Bar of New Mexico Young Lawyers Division held a monthly clinic for the Veterans Civil Justice Initiative. The clinic, which was hosted at the Raymond G. Murphy Medical Center in Albuquerque, offered veterans a broad range of veteran-specific and nonveteran-specific legal services.

On July 13, 2013, the St. Petersburg Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (Florida) hosted “Holidays in July” at a local bowling alley. The event provided gifts and activities for over 150 local children in challenging situations, such as children living in foster care as the result of abuse or neglect.

On July 25, 2013, the San Mateo County Bar Association Barristers (California) hosted a barbeque for the families of Haven House. Haven House is a part of the Shelter Network Organization, a comprehensive coordinated network of housing and social services for the homeless residents of the San Francisco Peninsula. During the event, the Barristers assisted with the setup, cooking, and serving of food to local families.

On August 15, 2013, the Grand Rapids Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (Michigan) co-hosted a golf outing with the Justice Foundation of West Michigan on behalf of the Grand Rapids Bar Association. This annual event serves to benefit both the YLS as well as the Justice Foundation of West Michigan.

On August 24, 2013, the San Diego County Bar Association New Lawyer Division (California) participated in a “Bench Bar Beach Cleanup” at Playa Pacifica along with I Love a Clean San Diego, judges from the San Diego Superior Court, and many other minority bar associations. Young lawyers from the NLD assisted in removing litter and debris from local beaches.

On August 29, 2013, the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California hosted a free legal clinic in Daly City.

On September 21, 2013, the Lackawanna County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (Pennsylvania) conducted its fourth annual Wills for Heroes program. On October 4, 2013, the Multnomah Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (Oregon) conducted its first Wills for Heroes event. Over 25 local attorneys and staff volunteered to run the clinic. Wills for Heroes is a service that provides wills, living wills, and health-care and financial powers of attorney to first responders free of charge.

In October 2013, the Baton Rouge Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (Louisiana) held its annualBelly Up at the Bar” event. This annual cook-off raises funds for the Baton Rouge Bar Foundation’s award-winning youth education programs, including “Teen Court,” the High School Mock Trial competition, Law Day, “Lawyer in the Classroom,” and the “Junior Partners Academy.”

Educating and Serving Affiliate Members

In July 2013, the Sarasota County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (Florida) hosted an afternoon session for summer interns conducted by some of the judges and other courthouse administrative staff. The session introduced the law clerks to the courthouse and the clerk’s office.

On July 12–13, 2013, the Missouri State Bar Association Young Lawyers Section held its summer meeting, at which several CLE events were presented.

On July 16, 2013, the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association (Texas) hosted a presentation titled “Lone Star Law: A Legal History of Texas” for its members.

On July 18, 2013, the Orange County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (California) hosted its annual “Young Lawyers and Law Clerks Reception.” The reception allowed young lawyers and law clerks to network with local judges and attorneys in a relaxed and fun setting.

On July 23, 2013, the Iowa State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division hosted a social event for ISBA members and their families participating in the “Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa” during an overnight stop in Des Moines.

On July 24, 2013, the Houston Young Lawyers Association (Texas) hosted a CLE event titled “In the Cloud: The Future of Internet and Electronic Evidence on Litigation and Ethics.” The discussion focused on how technology relates to issues such as privilege, ethical obligations, and case management.

On July 25, 2013, the Barristers Club of San Francisco (California) hosted its “29th Annual Judges Reception.” The Barristers host this signature event every year to bring members of the bar and the judiciary together in a relaxed setting. The event encourages informal interaction between the judiciary and the Club’s membership. This year’s event honored Judge William Haskell Alsup of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California who was presented with the Tara L. Riedley Barristers Choice Award. The Award is given each year to a state or federal judge in the Bay Area to recognize his or her extraordinary efforts to educate and encourage young lawyers new to the practice of law and to the courtroom.

On July 25–27, 2013, the Nevada Young Lawyers Section hosted its annual “Trial Academy” at the Nevada State Bar Annual Meeting. The event included sessions on trial evidence, opening statements, themes and theories, voir dire, direct and cross examination, jury instructions, and closing arguments. Academy participants received hands-on, in-depth training from numerous Nevada experts, including Supreme Court justices, several judges, and seasoned expert trial attorneys. The Nevada YLS also hosted a “Going Solo” CLE program at the Annual Meeting to assist young attorneys starting their own firms.

On July 31, 2013, the Alameda County Bar Association Barristers Section (California) hosted a 90-minute panel presentation entitled “If I Had Only Known Then What I Know Now: What I Never Learned from Law School.” The panel included an Alameda County judge, a private practitioner, and a deputy district attorney. The panel provided ideas and suggestions to help young attorneys recently admitted to the bar in ethically and competently navigating through the Alameda County courts and legal system.

In August 2013, the Sarasota County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (Florida) hosted a mentoring event for young lawyers and experienced lawyers in the community.

On August 16, 2013, the Contra Costa County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (California) hosted a “Bridging the Gap” program. This event, which offered four hours of CLE credit, provided an opportunity for new lawyers, young lawyers, and lawyers new to the county to get acquainted with the Contra Costa County Bar Association, the superior court, and local judges and practitioners.

On October 30, 2013, the Barristers Executive Section of San Joaquin County Bar Association (California) hosted a roundtable program titled “The Top 10 List: What Every Young Lawyer Should Know, But Likely Didn’t Learn in Law School.” The event featured several judges and attorneys in panel discussions on real world skills needed by young attorneys as they begin their practice.

On November 1, 2013, the Bridgeport Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (Connecticut) hosted a CLE event titled “Raising the Bar: A Bench-Bar Symposium on Professionalism in the Judicial District of Fairfield” at the Bridgeport Superior Court.

Networking with Others in the Profession

On July 10, the Bar Association of the District of Columbia Young Lawyers Section hosted its annual “Cigar and Scotch Tasting” fund-raising event in Washington D.C.

On July 15, 2013, the Bridgeport Bar Association Young Lawyers Section (Connecticut) held its annual summer social at the Black Rock Yacht Club. On August 12, 2013, the Young Lawyers hosted its “Annual Golf Outing” at the Mill River Country Club for a day of golf, relaxation and fun.

On July 18, 2013, the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association Barristers hosted its annual “Summer Breeze and Law Clerk Party” celebration. The event brings together young attorneys, law clerks, law students, and members of the judiciary for an evening of networking. During the Summer Breeze celebration, the section recognized the outstanding accomplishments of some of the best and brightest young attorneys who have, despite being in the early stages of their careers, demonstrated great potential as future leaders of the legal community.

On July 26, 2013, the Alameda County Bar Association Barristers Section hosted a lunch with Judge Tara Desautels, who presides over Department 303 of the Alameda County Superior Court, family law.

On August 5, 2013, the Alameda County Bar Association Barristers Section hosted its “9th Annual Barrister Golf Classic.”

On September 27, 2013, the Orange County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section held its “22nd Annual YLS Charity Golf Tournament” at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club.
