Affordable Portables
Just in time for summer travels, computer makers have released new value-priced notebook models. Aimed at the budget-conscious, the Hewlett-Packard ProBook line is available in glossy merlot red or black, features an LE D backlit display, and comes in 14-inch, 15.6-inch or 17.3-inch screen sizes. The smaller models offer AMD or Intel processors, while the larger model offers Intel Core 2 Duo chips. The smallest model costs less than $600. Keeping it even smaller, Samsung’s N110 and N120 Mini Notebooks boast a new sleeker, curvier design that measures just over 10 inches wide for a cost of less than $500. Both models weigh less than 3 pounds. The N110 has a 93 percent full-size keyboard, while the N120 has a 97 percent full-size keyboard and trackpad. Both models include a 6-cell lithium battery powering up to nine hours of continuous use. With a 1.6GH z processor, 1GB of RA M and 160GB hard drive, the 110 is functional for browsing the Internet and using software applications. The N120 offers more multimedia features with an SRS 2.1 channel system, two 1.5 watt stereo speakers and a dedicated subwoofer and an integrated 1.3 megapixel digital motion camera with videoconferencing capabilities.

Streamlined Matter Timelines
West Case Timeline is an easy-to-use, robust timeline tool with a flexible user interface, professional theme templates and various sharing and presentation capabilities. Features include spreadsheet-style data entry and integration with West Case Notebook. Users can enter events individually or in batches, import key facts from West Case Notebook, edit events as the case develops, and connect notes and source information to specific events. Once the data is entered, users can choose preset themes, create custom themes with drag-and-drop formatting, and toggle between three main formats: bar chart, flag chart or chronology. Timelines can be published to PDF, HTML and graphic files for sharing, and inserted directly into PowerPoint presentations. Case Timeline automatically creates and formats the timeline as events change. In addition, users can quickly create a timeline of Key Facts already identified in Case Notebook.

A New World in Professional Research
Wolters Kluwer Law & Business has introduced IntelliConnect, a tool to simplify the search process. Using a format similar to many of today’s more popular search engines, this user-friendly research tool is easy to learn with everything accessible from one screen. Users can search entire subscriptions with no need to pre-select anything when initiating a search. Filtering allows users to select different methods for sorting and scanning for results. A tri-screen view enables users to see opened documents as well as the search results list simultaneously. Easy searching and browsing provides the flexibility to use either or both Browse and Search to find desired information or documents. The Search Within a Search option allows users to easily refine results by searching within a set of results. Once a relevant document is located, users can place it in a tray for later printing, e-mailing or pasting into a client document.

Law Clerks for Hire through New Contract Jobs Network
Law Clerk Connection is a new nationwide network for law students, law school graduates and lawyers searching for contract legal research and drafting jobs. The service provides a resource to help legal employers reduce costs by utilizing law students and recent graduates on a contract basis for time-intensive legal research and document handling. Once registered on the site, employers can post legal projects to be bid on by law students and graduates of ABA-approved law schools. Those seeking contract work register and post portfolios, which allow employers to verify education, skills and writing samples, as well as feedback from other lawyers who have utilized that law clerk. The site offers project management and collaboration tools as well. Once an employer has chosen one or more clerks for the project, documents can be shared through a secure and confidential MediaShare forum, and messages can be communicated through a private message board, which also serves as the project record. For a limited time, legal employers may post projects for free.

New Collaboration Suite
PBworks (formerly PBwiki) has launched PBworks Legal Edition, designed to provide a better way to share documents, collaborate with clients and manage complex cases and case teams. The Legal Edition builds on PBworks Professional Plus, with features such as unlimited storage for documents and files, full-text search of document content and mobile access via BlackBerry and iPhone. Legal-focused features include a faster, affordable electronic deal room, a customizable legal knowledgebase, complete audit logs of all activity and built-in customizable legal templates.

E-Discovery Dashboard Tool
Xerox Litigation Services’ new Processing and Review Dashboard provides alerts on potential deadline issues and helps keep better tabs on review cycle costs. The dashboard provides status updates to help Xerox Litigation Services users manage court-mandated deadlines and track electronic data processing and review in real-time. Users access the dashboard via Xerox’s Web-based platform to view information such as how much data has been processed by Xerox, what portion is ready for review, and what has already been reviewed.
