Spotlighting Innovative Firms

The College of Law Practice Management’s InnovAction Awards recognize law firms that have pursued—and achieved— excellence and innovation in the management and delivery of legal services. “We know a great deal of innovative thinking is at work around the world to solve the business challenges faced by law firms in today’s competitive market,” says -InnovAction Co-Chair Merrilyn Astin Tarlton. The 2008 award winners demonstrate the extraordinary accomplishments that can be achieved when firms dare to think outside of the box.

Mallesons Stephen Jaques of Sydney, Australia, was selected for its PeopleFinder initiative—an internally developed Web 2.0 application that integrates numerous scheduling and tracking systems firmwide, populating its intranet -directory and BlackBerrys with accurate information about the location of the firm’s professionals at any time. The purpose? Fewer delayed client conversations. The result? Over 10,000 more calls per month into the firm are being answered by the right person rather than by voicemail.

Novus Law, a global legal services firm, was -selected for its Lean Six Sigma analysis of the litigation discovery process as a means to capture, measure and improve quality, as well as reduce costs.

Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman in Washington, DC, was selected for its ValueChain, a novel method of visually displaying clients’ objectives, capabilities, opportunities and risks of global outsourcing business efforts in order to support effective and efficient contracting. Pillsbury was recently granted a business method patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The awards will be presented in September during the College’s annual meeting in Chicago. To learn more about the InnovAction Awards, visit www.innovactionaward.com.
