Paris, New York, Rio, London, Dubai, Rome, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Mumbai—and beyond to nearly every nook and cranny of the world. In the 21st century, it’s a global marketplace filled with clients that increasingly need cross-border legal services. In response, the practice of law is taking on an international flavor.

Law firms are opening foreign branch offices, joining international referral networks, homing in on cross-cultural marketing strategies, studying the regulations of foreign jurisdictions, and more—much more—in their efforts to court prospects and retain clients doing business in far-flung regions. All of this creates new challenges for firm leaders, administrators, lawyers and staff.

In considering international work, there are myriad practical questions to examine, cultural and marketing implications to mull, ethics considerations to ponder, and the inevitable questions of how much any particular initiative will cost and how soon it will produce a reasonable ROI.
