The Law Practice Management Section continues its commitment to “going green” in March, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at ABA TECHSHOW® and pursuing several initiatives focused on environmentally friendly practices in law firms and ABA operations.

In addition to cosponsoring the ongoing ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge and contributing to ABA’s position on sustainable law practice management, LPM will present “Paperless Office” and “Going Green” tracks of CLE programming at ABA TECHSHOW, March 13-15. The LPM Section also continues to supplement Law Practice magazine content with our popular webzines Law Practice Today and Law Technology Today and electronic newsletters.


LPM Forums are valuable discussion tools. LPM has recently launched a new resource tool offering members a chance to discuss practice management issues via Web discussion boards. LPM Forums can be found via a link on the LPM Section home page at www.lawpractice.org in the left-hand navigation bar. Participants are able to read and respond to threads of discussions concerning an array of topics that fall under each of the four core groups—marketing, management, technology and finance—and on sustainable law practice management. If you have a question that you need answered or you want to share your knowledge on a particular subject, you may do so by accessing the LPM Forums Web discussion boards.


Plan now for CLE and upcoming LPM Section meetings. In addition to ongoing CLE teleconference seminars www.lawpractice.org/cle, quarterly Section meetings offer specialized programming designed to improve your law practice, along with networking events that connect members from across the country.

Don’t miss the LPM Spring Meeting, May 14-17, 2008, at the Hotel Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Then at the ABA Annual Meeting in the Big Apple this August, join the LPM Section at the Sheraton New York, August 7-9, for Section business and to catch up with fellow LPM members. An exciting and informative array of CLE programming will be offered.

Young Lawyers Mentoring Fellowship Program. As part of its continuing efforts to reach out to young lawyers, the ABA LPM Section offers a Leadership Mentoring Program to attract and mentor future leaders of the Section. Imagine the opportunities to meet and network with some of the country’s foremost experts on topics related to the business of practicing law—marketing, management, technology and finance—as well as career and work-life balance issues.

Section leaders choose at least two candidates each year to serve two-year terms. The appointees will have the opportunity to attend Section meetings and serve on important committees that affect the strategic direction of the Section and its service to members. LPM holds quarterly Section meetings, including at the ABA Annual and Midyear Meetings, and offers a generous reimbursement policy. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

The Lawyer’s Guide to Collaboration Tools and Technologies: Smart Ways to Work Together by Dennis Kennedy and Tom Mighell. This book showcases how to use technologies such as Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Office 2007, Adobe Acrobat 8 and Google Docs to take better advantage of collaborative tools and the benefits they bring. The authors provide practical, concrete action steps and techniques so even the least-tech-savvy lawyer can get started.


The Lawyer’s Guide to Adobe Acrobat, 3rd Edition, by David L. Masters. This book will help any practice run smarter by showing how lawyers can use the latest version of Acrobat to work with digital documents. Topics include how to use PDFs to streamline document management, increase productivity and reduce reliance on paper; key features and tools within Acrobat designed just for the legal community; using Acrobat for e-briefs; and environmental considerations.
