With the help of newly launched Web site Avvo.com, consumers can  now review detailed profile information, the Avvo Rating, and client reviews for every lawyer in Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Washington and the District of Columbia. The ratings are calculated using a mathematical model that considers the information shown in a lawyer's profile, including years in practice, disciplinary history, professional achievements and industry recognition. Avvo provides lawyers with a free online profile to improve their presence on the Internet. Attorneys can update their profile with as much information as they like, as often as they like. Also, by going to Avvo.com and claiming their free profile, lawyers are able to request endorsements from other lawyers as well as reviews from past clients. The company currently covers and plans to expand into additional states. www.avvo.com

Litigation Management, Inc.’s SMARTCASE is a first-of-its-kind Web-based application that allows users to input and store medical records; sort and organize by subject, case or client; share data with team members; and create a final work product, pre-trial. Subscribers access the online application through a secure Web site for a low monthly rate. Two versions are available: SMARTCASEpro is designed for law firms with multiple users, featuring a generous amount of dedicated secure server space to store records and a dedicated technical representative for training and telephone support. SMARTCASEone is tailored exclusively for the individual user whose storage and usage requirements are more modest. Both versions allow subscribers to monitor multiple cases in a single view, and quickly retrieve other active cases. Subscribers can also scan documents into the system, or submit them for scanning and posting to the appropriate case. Tools to embed hyperlinks of imaged documents within the body of a medical summary document are also available, giving subscribers the ability to produce professional and powerful work products. www.smartcase.com

Voice-to-Text Conversion for E-Discovery

With the increasing use of voice-over-IP technology, legal professionals are being called on to conduct review of these audio files as part of the evidence review process. In response, ONSITE3 has added voice-to-text conversion capabilities to its Electronic Evidence Enterprise (E3) platform. The new technology enables transcripts of VoIP voice-mail messages, which are increasingly available as e-mail attachments in many corporate environments, to be handled in the same manner as other electronic documents. Text transcripts and original media files can also be hosted within the eView document review platform to facilitate effective and efficient document review of voice-mail messages. ONSITE3's new technology can also convert audio tracks from most types of video files into electronic text format. www.ONSITE3.com

Painless Legal Graphics in Five Minutes or Less

SmartDraw 2008 Legal Edition’s new features are designed to help legal professionals create presentation-quality graphics in five minutes or less. Hundreds of new specialized SmartTemplates automate the creation of every type of legal graphic, including evidence charts, timelines, case chronologies, crime scenes and forensics.  In addition, the new version includes tools that help users easily enhance illustrations. For example, Live Map captures live data from the Internet so that users can add roads, regions, counties, zip codes, countries and satellite images to illustrations—ideal for accident reconstructions. Photo editing software makes it easy to incorporate photos into business graphics, and a new picture chart tool creates charts that use images to display data instead of standard bars, lines and circles. The Express Charts feature lets users pick a chart style and type data directly into the bars, or simply drag them to represent the right values. And flowcharts can be built using simple commands with the new automatic flowcharting feature. SmartDraw 2008 also offers one-click copy to Microsoft Office programs, PDF and many other graphic formats. To assist with selecting graphics, an online Encyclopedia of Business Graphics defines the various types of graphics, explains how each is used, and offers an example and a SmartTemplate. www.smartdraw.com

Key Business Intelligence Reports

Elite Reporting Essentials, a new business intelligence reporting tool from Thomson Elite, offers standard financial management reports and an intuitive dashboard interface. Most business intelligence applications require extensive data integration to migrate financial data into a data warehouse. Reporting Essentials simplifies this process by creating “data universes” that link directly to Elite Enterprise data. These universes contain information on different areas of the firm such as accounts receivable and timekeeper information. This direct linking shortens implementation and training cycles, allowing for less-expensive service and maintenance costs. www.thomsonelite.com
