Thurgood Marshall Award Dinner and CLE Programs Highlight 2007 Annual Meeting

Among the highlights of the ABA Annual Meeting, Aug. 9-12, 2007, will be five CLE programs and the 16 th Annual Thurgood Marshall Award.

Saturday evening, the Section will present the Hon. Matthew J. Perry, Jr., with the 2007 Thurgood Marshall Award at the Thurgood Marshall Dinner, which will be held at the Westin St. Francis, in the Grand Ballroom, Mezzanine Floor, at 8:00 p.m. The award will be presented by House Majority Whip, Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), with personal remarks given by Former Mayor of Charlotte, N.C., Harvey Gantt. U.S. District Court Judge Thelton Henderson will deliver the evening’s keynote address.

On Sat., Aug. 11, at 2:00 p.m., the Section will present, Public Safety and Homeland Security in Indian Country. The panel will address a number of issues that have created a significant crisis in effective law enforcement on Indian reservations.

On Sun., Aug. 12, the Section will continue its series of debates with the Federalist Society with a program, Congressional Oversight and Executive Power in Today's World. Panelists will debate the appropriate level of Congressional oversight and the amount of Presidential discretion in the war on terror, detention, interrogation, surveillance and U.S. Attorney firings. The debate will take place in the Moscone Center, followed by a reception sponsored by the Federalist Society. Also on Sun., Aug. 12, the Section will sponsor the CLE, Who Owns Your Genes: How Gene Patents are Trampling Individual Rights. The panel will discuss how patents on the sequences of human genes significantly affect civil liberties, including guarantees of freedom of religion, freedom of expression and academic freedom, as well as reproductive liberty, privacy, and the right to informed consent. The panel will explore gene patenting from a range of perspectives, and propose new legal and ethical frameworks for approaching these issues.
