Thurgood Marshall Award Dinner, Commemoration of 1964 Civil Rights Act Highlight Section Events at ABA Annual Meeting

Among the highlights of Section activity at this year's ABA Annual Meeting, set for August 5-10, 2004, in Atlanta, Ga., are the 13th Annual Thurgood Marshall Award Dinner and a symposium commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

On Saturday, Aug. 7, the Section will honor veteran civil rights lawyer Fred D. Gray, who served as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s first civil rights attorney and also represented Rosa Parks during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, with the 2004 Thurgood Marshall Award. Rev. Joseph A. Lowery, co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, will deliver the keynote speech for the event. The award dinner will be held at 8:00 p.m. in the Peachtree Ballroom C, Level 8, of the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, following a reception beginning at 7:00 p.m.

On Sunday, Aug. 8, the Section will sponsor a symposium commemorating the anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The three-part series of programs will address the history of the Civil Rights Act, the progeny of the Act, and the future of civil rights in the U.S. The Section also will sponsor several other programs. On Friday, Aug. 6 a screening of the Sundance Film Festival documentary, Deadline: The Lessons of the Illinois Moratorium Experience, will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Atlanta Hotel.

On Monday, Aug. 9, the Section will sponsor three additional programs:

"The Federal Judicial Nomination Process: Ensuring a Fair and Independent Judiciary"; "Ending Segregation and Protecting the Autonomy of the Elderly and Persons with Disabilities: The Intersection of the Fair Housing Act and Olmstead"; and "Is Justice Available in the New Russia? The Use of Criminal Prosecution for Political Purposes." All programs will be offered for CLE credit and will take place at the Georgia World Congress Center. Panelists include Father Robert F. Drinan, Wade Henderson, Ted Shaw, Karen Narasaki, and others.

The Section Council is scheduled to meet from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, and from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7. The Section's Committee Excellence Award will be presented to the Environmental Justice Committee on Friday, Aug. 6, during the Council's luncheon.

The Section Annual Meeting and Election, on Friday, Aug. 6 at 1:00 p.m., will be open to all members in good standing. Members also are encouraged to attend meetings of Section committees in which they are interested on Saturday morning, Aug. 7, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
