On 5/13/10, the Office of Justice Programs announced 6/3/10-6/4/10 hearings in Washington, DC, of the Review Panel on Prison Rape to assist the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) in identifying common characteristics of victims and perpetrators of sexual victimization in juvenile facilities, and the common characteristics of juvenile facilities with the highest and lowest incidence of rape, based on an anonymous survey by the BJS of youth in a representative sample of juvenile facilities. On 5/13/10, the Social Security Administration announced a request for public comment on several proposed information collections, including the Waiver of Your Right to Personal Appearance Before an Administrative Law Judge, the Request for Change in Time/Place of Disability Hearing, and the Child Care Dropout Questionnaire. On 5/13/10, the Department of the Treasury, Department of Labor, and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced interim final regulations implementing the requirements for group health plans and health insurance issuers in the group and individual markets under provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act regarding dependent coverage of children who have not attained age 26. On 5/13/10, the Department of the Treasury announced a request for public comment on a proposed rulemaking that would provide guidance to employers and health insurance issuers providing group health insurance coverage offered in connection with group health plans under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 and the Public Health Service Act. On 5/13/10, the Employee Benefits Security Administration, Department of Labor, announced a 6/29/10-7/1/10 meeting in Washington, DC, of the Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans to discuss student employee benefit plan auditing and financial reporting models, disparities for women and minorities in retirement and health care, and health care literacy. On 5/13/10, the Administration for Children and Families, HHS, announced several tribal consultation sessions during the months of June, July, August, and October in CA, SC, WI, OK, MA, SD, WA, and AK to discuss ways to better meet the needs of American Indian and Alaska Native children and their families, taking into consideration funding allocations, distribution formulas, and other issues affecting the delivery of Head Start services in their geographic locations. On 5/12/10, the president transmitted a message to Congress continuing past 5/22/10 the national emergency declared with respect to the stabilization of Iraq.
On 5/13/10, Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security, announced a request for public comment on a submitted information collection, the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act Certification of Origin, which provides duty-free treatment under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) to sensitive articles from countries of sub-Saharan Africa that would normally be excluded from GSP duty treatment. On 5/12/10, the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs approved HR 5145, the Assuring Quality Care for Veterans Act.
On 5/12/10, the House passed, by a 417-0 vote, HR 5014, to clarify the health care provided by the secretary of Veterans Affairs that constitutes minimum essential coverage.
