On 3/16/10, the Senate passed S 1782, to provide improvements for the operations of the federal courts.

The Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, House Appropriations Committee, will hold hearings on proposed fiscal 2011 appropriations for programs and activities under its jurisdiction, including the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. 3/18/10, 10 am, H-310 Capitol.
On 3/17/10, the National Crime Prevention and Privacy Compact Council published a notice which provides the process that a state or federal agency may utilize to request Compact Council approval, under the authority of the Fingerprint Submission Requirement Rule, to conduct federal noncriminal justice criminal history record checks of individuals who, during an existing or impending emergency or disaster, will have access to children, the elderly, or disabled persons. On 3/16/10, the Senate passed H Con Res 249, commemorating the 45 th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the role that it played in ensuring the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
On 3/17/10, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), announced a request for public comment on a new information collection, the FEMA Preparedness Grants Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program, which is one of a comprehensive set of measures to help strengthen the nation against risks associated with potential terrorist attacks. HR 4858 ( Israel, D-NY), to establish an advisory committee to issue nonbinding government-wide guidelines on making public information available on the Internet, to require publicly available government information held by the executive branch to be made available on the Internet, and to express the sense of Congress that publicly available information held by the legislative and judicial branches should be available on the Internet; to Oversight and Government Reform. On 3/17/10, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (HIT), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced several meetings throughout the month of April of the workgroups of the HIT Policy Committee and the HIT Standards Committee to discuss issues specific to those workgroups. On 3/17/10, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), HHS, announced a request for public comment on a proposed extension to a submitted information collection, the Assignment of Agency Component for Review of Premarket Applications, which specifies how FDA will determine the organizational component within FDA assigned to have primary jurisdiction for the premarket review and regulation of products that are comprised of drugs, devices, and/or biological products. On 3/16/10, the House passed, by a 412-1 vote, H Res 605, to recognize the continued persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China on the 10 th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party campaign to suppress the Falun Gong spiritual movement and to call for an immediate end to the campaign to persecute, intimidate, imprison, and torture Falun Gong practitioners.
On 3/17/10, the Legal Services Corporation announced the availability of competitive grant funds and the solicitation of grant proposals from interested parties who are qualified to provide effective, efficient, and high quality civil legal services to eligible clients in the service areas of listed states and territories. The exact amount of congressionally appropriated funds and the date, terms, and conditions of their availability for calendar year 2011 have not been determined. On 3/16/10, the Subcommittee on Health, House Committee on Energy and Commerce, approved HR 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2009.
S 3118 ( Kerry, D-MA), to amend Title 38, United States Code, to provide that monetary benefits paid to veterans by states and municipalities shall be excluded from consideration as income for purposes of pension benefits paid by the secretary of Veterans Affairs; to Veterans’ Affairs. On 3/17/10, the Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans, Department of Veterans Affairs, announced a 4/12/10-4/15/10 meeting in San Diego, CA, to hold discussions with key staff members on services, benefits, delivery challenges and successes, to work on the after-action report, and to receive a briefing from the area director on the California Area Indian Health Service, among other things.
