New CJS Committee Forming on Women and Criminal Justice

Professor Myrna Raeder, chairperson of the Criminal Justice Section, announces formation of the new Ad Hoc Committee on Women in the Criminal Justice Community. Judge Sheila Murphy, Presiding Judge of the Sixth Municipal District of the Circuit Court of Cook County, and Lori G. Levin, Supervisor of the Mental Health Division of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, will chair the committee. Cook County Public Defender Rita Fry will serve as vice chair.

The chairs are now appointing new members to the committee, and they are soliciting action items from members of the Criminal Justice Section. Some potential issues to be explored include problems faced by women practitioners in the criminal justice arena, and gender issues related to victims, witnesses, defendants, and prisoners.

Additional committees in the formative stages include the Ad Hoc Committee on Law School Outreach and the Ad Hoc Committee on Innovative Programs. The latter will be chaired by Judge Susan Finley and Mary Harkenrider. The committee anticipates looking at a variety of programs from around the country, including drug courts, community courts, and restitution councils.
