Strategic Plan

Vol. 13 No. 10

AuthorDefn.: “Strategic Plan” – “A systematic process of envisioning a desired future, and translating this vision into broadly defined goals or objectives and a sequence of steps to achieve them.”

I am proud to report that your Health Law Section has completed an intensive process of updating the Section’s Strategic Plan. The Section’s Council approved the Plan at the Council meeting in May. Through the process, we discovered that the last Strategic Plan adopted under David Hilger’s leadership in 2010 provided Goals and Objectives that match the Section’s mission precisely, but the action plan to implementation needed to be revised to fit within the digital, portable, instant world we live in today.

Get ready to see new and innovative ways the Section will deliver content to its members and provide resources for the greater health law bar. We want you to have access to health law updates quickly, precisely and accurately with the focus on adding value to our members’ work for their clients. To that end, we would love to have feedback from you on content that you need to assist you in your day to day activities for your clients – legal analysis, updates on policy changes, updates from CMS and other agencies, enforcement initiatives, forms for various health law transactions, best practices in the health law arena – HIPAA, audits, compliance, M&A, etc., state law issues affecting healthcare providers, and much more. Contact us with your ideas.

As a sample of things to come, the Section rolled out its much-anticipated searchable content library in May -- an exclusive member benefit -- with the following announcement from our director, Simeon Carson: “The ABA Health Law Section is pleased to announce a free new member benefit, the Health Law Content Library that provides members with the exclusive access to cutting-edge articles, news, conference materials and much more! Get the most out your Health Law Section membership with member-only access to archives of:

 - The Health Lawyer, the Section’s Burton Award winning, bi-monthly magazine provides informative articles that focus on a wide range of areas in the health law field and offers in-depth and incisive analysis of key issues.

- ABA Health eSource, the Section’s monthly electronic newsletter provides cutting-edge, original articles on recent health law issues and recent news from the Section.

 - HLBytes, the Section’s weekly roundup of health law news, provided through Health Law Section News, the Section’s daily blog.

 - Conference materials from the Section’s three premier programs, Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law, Washington Health Law Summit and Physicians Legal Issues.

Health Law Section members, be sure to bookmark www.ambar.org/hlscontent as a go-to substantive resource for your practice needs.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Susan Pachikara, Program Specialist, susan.pachikara@americanbar.org. Kudos to Susan Pachikara and your tireless efforts to accomplish the roll-out.

My personal thanks goes out to the Section’s officers, Hilary Young, Chair-Elect, Alexandria McCombs, Vice-Chair, Jay McEniry, Secretary, Eugene Holmes, Budget Officer and Bill Horton, Immediate Past Chair on the many hours spent reviewing and revising the Strategic Plan. I also owe a debt of gratitude to the Section’s Council for invaluable input, tweaks and critiques to the Plan, then passage and a commitment to carry out the Plan.

The Section is a model for any group that is embarking on a strategic plan. The Section truly met the definition: “A systematic process of envisioning a desired future, and translating this vision into broadly defined goals or objectives and a sequence of steps to achieve them.” It is an honor and a privilege to work alongside of each of you.

Your Chair,

Joyce Hall

P.S. Mississippi Trivia: Mississippi has always been a state for entrepreneurs. In 1884 the concept of selling shoes in boxes in pairs (right foot and left foot) occurred in Vicksburg at Phil Gilbert's Shoe Parlor on Washington Street.
