Health law is a practice area organized around an industry, not a body of law. Typical health lawyers have a knowledge base that includes many topics, such as bioethics, corporate, insurance, administrative, Medicare/Medicaid, tax, privacy, health information, and food and drug law. In addition, a number of specialty areas within health law have arisen, including health law criminal law, antitrust, bankruptcy, life sciences, labor and employment, medical education and many others. For attorneys entering the field, not only does this create an exciting work environment, but it means that a number of career options are presented.
Health law is constantly changing. As the industry changes, so do the issues impacting the practice. There is no health lawyer today doing the same thing that they were doing one year ago, or even six months ago. The field is exceptionally dynamic, with clients constantly bringing new issues requiring legal advice to the fore. This environment of constant change can work to the advantage of attorneys, because it is possible to develop expertise on a certain area of health law fairly quickly since it is new to everyone.
Careers in Health Law can help lawyers to reenergize, rethink, and reposition their career goals and strategy in this dynamic industry.
