The term refers to efforts underway to make courts, and their proceedings, more understandable and accessible to the countless individuals who each day walk into this country's federal, state, county, and city courthouses.

Efforts taken to address the needs of self-represented litigants is especially valuable for making courts more user-friendly, since many of the innovations and services implemented for self-represented litigants directly affect and improve the court experience for all users.
