CHICAGO, Oct. 24, 2024 — The American Bar Association joins with people around the world this Oct. 24 in celebrating United Nations Day 2024, marking the anniversary of the day the UN Charter came into force in 1945.
The theme for this year is “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. In that declaration, the United Nations recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”
The ABA has supported the United Nations since its inception and continues to work closely with the UN through the ABA Rule of Law Initiative, the Center for Human Rights, the Section of International Law and many other ABA groups to strengthen legal institutions across the world, expand access to justice and support a universal perspective of human rights. The ABA joins the United Nations in advocating worldwide for fundamental freedoms, respect for life and the peaceful settlement of conflicts.
