CHICAGO, Sept. 20, 2024 — The American Bar Association Antitrust Law Section will convene an Antitrust Masters Course for attorneys next week in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with an array of programs, including popular “the view” sessions from high-ranking officials of both the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice

The course is intended to boost the skills of young attorneys as well as provide enhanced training for more seasoned practitioners. Sessions will explore timely and important antitrust developments and offer practice tools that are used by some of the most experienced antitrust attorneys. In plenary sessions particularly, some of the nation’s top academics and experts will offer their expertise and insight.
The principal lecturers are Elizabeth M. Bailey, Charles River Associates, San Francisco; Andrew I. Gavil, Howard University School of Law, Washington, D.C.; William E. Kovacic, The George Washington University Law School, Washington, D.C.; and Howard A. Shelanski, Georgetown Law, Washington, D.C.
The two “view” programs are:
- “The View from the Federal Trade Commission” brings together attorneys from the agency to discuss key trends and issues related to recent FTC merger and non-merger enforcement actions in the high-tech, health care and other sectors; the agency’s use of Rule 6(b) investigations; and recent rule changes and procedural initiatives. Scheduled FTC speakers are Laura Alexander, deputy director, Bureau of Competition; Patricia V. Galvan, assistant director, Technology Enforcement Division; and Patricia McDermott, deputy assistant director, Anticompetitive Practices Division. It will be moderated by Steven J. Cernak, BonaLaw PC, Detroit.
Thursday, 1:15-2:15 p.m. - “The View from the Department of Justice” brings together attorneys from the Antitrust Division to discuss key trends and issues related to DOJ’s recent criminal, merger and civil non-merger enforcement initiatives. The panel will also address some of the division’s litigation initiatives and policy changes. Speakers are Thomas F. Zych Sr., Thompson Hine LLP, Cleveland; Emma M. Burnham, director of criminal enforcement, U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, Washington, D.C.; and Ryan J. Danks; director of civil enforcement, Antitrust Division, Washington, D.C.
Friday, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
There also will be three well-known antitrust keynote speakers: Michael D. Hausfeld, Hausfeld LLP New York, will speak after the DOJ discussion on Friday. Cynthia M. Rufe, judge, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, will speak from 6:30-7:00 p.m. on Thursday night. Amit P. Mehta, judge, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C., will provide keynote remarks on Saturday morning from 11:15 -11:45 a.m.
