Magazine explores Native American, Alaska Native rights
“This special edition includes articles on the progress being made to restore Tribal jurisdiction and efforts to hold perpetrators of gender-based violence against members of Tribal communities accountable. It also includes key discussions about water rights and the impact of climate change,” said Robin Runge, chair of the section.
The issue is a collection of articles written by some of the country’s foremost human and civil rights experts. The co-editors are Heather Torres, co-chair of the Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice Section on Native American Concerns Committee and program director at the Tribal Law and Policy Institute, and Abbey Chavez, program assistant at the Tribal Law and Policy Institute. Torres and Chavez also wrote the introduction, entitled “Knowing Our Past, Envisioning Our Future.” The article, “The Future of Native American Civil Rights,” by John E. Echohawk, founder and executive director of the Native American Rights Fund, explores ways to help protect the rights of Native Americans to vote in federal elections.
“We hoped to honor the work of Native pathbreakers in the field by marking the historic growth in influence and impact of Native lawyers, programs and advocacy,” said Torres. “We hoped to inspire readers to take meaningful action steps to stand in unity with Native communities, Native voices and work together to advance a more just future for all.”
