ABA to honor 2023 Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts recipients

WASHINGTON, July 13, 2023 — The American Bar Association will present its 2023 Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts, which recognize outstanding work that fosters the American public’s understanding of law and the legal system, in a hybrid program on Tuesday, July 25. The award is the ABA’s highest honor in recognition of this purpose.

ABA President Deborah Enix-Ross will give remarks after presenting nine Silver Gavels and five honorable mentions selected from among 30 finalists out of 165 entries received in all eligible categories, which include books, commentary, documentaries, drama and literature, magazines, multimedia, newspapers, radio and television.

No more than one Silver Gavel is presented in each category.

Topics focusing on inequality, injustice, forgiveness, redemption, abortion rights, eavesdropping, affirmative action and modern-day slavery took the top prizes. To see a complete list of Silver Gavel winners and honorable mentions, click here.

The association has presented these awards annually since 1958. The 18-member ABA Standing Committee on Gavel Awards makes final award decisions.
