WASHINGTON, June 23, 2023 —The American Bar Association is concerned about recent acts of harassment against Soraya Gutiérrez, a renowned human rights lawyer in Colombia, and her family.
The latest threat to and intimidation of Gutiérrez occurred on April 30, 2023, when she returned home to find her house raided and searched.
Protection for the independence of lawyers, especially those who work on human rights issues, is an Inter-American Court tenet and a United Nations Basic Principle. The ABA calls on the Public Ministry of Colombia to conduct the necessary investigations into the attack on Gutiérrez.
The ABA is the largest voluntary association of lawyers in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.
