Stephen G. Breyer, newly retired associate justice of the United States Supreme Court, accepts the ABA Medal on Aug. 6 during the General Assembly of the American Bar Association Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The ABA Medal is the association's highest honor, bestowed upon a lawyer for exceptionally distinguished service to the cause of American jurisprudence. Breyer is honored in 2022 for his extraordinary 50-year career as a public servant, a defender of the rule of law and a promoter of judicial independence. Breyer has been an ABA member since 1988.
