About 60 government speakers from the Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service and Capitol Hill as well as other tax experts will appear on more than 40 panels to lead in-depth discussions and provide explanations of the latest federal, state and international legal developments and planning trends.
The Jan. 31 opening plenary session will feature William G. Gale, co-director of the Tax Policy Center, who will talk about mainstream public finance analysis and race issues. Gale is the Arjay and Frances Miller Chair in Federal Economic Policy and a senior fellow in the economic studies program at the Brookings Institution. His research focuses on tax policy, fiscal policy, pensions and saving behavior.
Loretta Collins Argrett, a retired Justice Department official who was the first African American to serve as assistant attorney general in the Tax Division, also will offer remarks at the opening plenary about her inspirational tax career. She will also provide suggestions to newer tax lawyers on how to continue efforts to create a more equitable, inclusive and diverse Section of Taxation and tax bar.
Five panels will take a look at digital currency, including “Cryptocurrency for Employee Benefits Lawyers — What You Need to Know” and “Digital Assets — More than Just a Bitcoin Craze.” Additional programs will examine everything from corporate tax-related proposals of the Build Back Better Act to new ways to transform your tax research as well as race-based grantmaking.
“Although we all miss the sense of community that comes with meeting in person, the virtual meeting is the next best thing,” said Julie Divola, chair of the Tax Section. “Our staff has worked its magic to re-create the meeting experience on the virtual platform, complete with incomparable substantive content and exceptional networking events.”
