Pennsylvania lawyer Samuel J. Arena Jr. to receive ABA fidelity and surety law award

WASHINGTON, Jan. 2, 2019 – The American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) will present Pennsylvania attorney Samuel J. Arena Jr. with its Martin J. Andrew Award on Thursday, Jan. 17, during the 2019 ABA Fidelity and Surety Law Midwinter Conference at the Hilton Bayfront in San Diego, Calif.

The Martin J. Andrew Award for Lifetime Achievement in Fidelity and Surety Law is the highest award given by the TIPS Fidelity and Surety Law Committee. It is considered the pinnacle of achievement for anyone practicing fidelity and/or surety law.

“During his decades of active service to the committee, Sam has devoted countless hours supporting our members, encouraging participation in the committee, managing conferences, authoring numerous scholarly articles, mentoring younger professionals and promoting scholarship in the law that is critical to our work,” said Brett Divers, chair of the TIPS Fidelity and Surety Law Committee. “The strength and stability of the committee, and its success over time, are a direct result of Sam’s leadership, service and skill.”

Arena has concentrated his 35-year practice in the areas of insurance law and fidelity and surety law.  A leader in Stradley Ronon’s insurance practice group in Philadelphia, Pa., and the chair of the firm’s fidelity and surety practice group, he represents insurance companies nationally in complex insurance coverage, extra-contractual liability and fidelity and surety matters.

Arena is a long-time active member of the TIPS Fidelity & Surety Law Committee, having served as chair from 2004--05. He has held many leadership roles within the section and has served as chair of the TIPS Publications Editorial Board, vice chair of the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee and a member of the section’s governing body, TIPS Council.  Arena has also served on the TIPS Financial Committee, TortSource Editorial Board, Long-Range Planning Committee, Scope and Correlation Committee, Task Force on Strategic Alliances, Section Conference Task Force, Task Force on Insurance and Corporate Counsel Involvement, Task Force on Corporate Governance Institute, Electronic Media Coordinating Group and Communications Coordinating Group. 

Arena is a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel and an adjunct professor at his alma mater, Villanova University School of Law, where he teaches Advanced Insurance Law: Coverage Disputes and serves as a guest lecturer for the law school’s Introductory Insurance Law Course Insurance Law and PolicyArena received his J.D., cum laude, Order of the Coif, from Villanova University School of Law and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Ursinus College.
