Social justice activist Bryan Stevenson receives ABA’s highest honor

Extolling his life-long dedication to giving voice to the voiceless, ABA President Hilarie Bass presents Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, with the ABA Medal during the Aug. 4 General Assembly at the association’s Annual Meeting in Chicago.

In his acceptance speech, Stevenson encourages lawyers to create justice by opening doors and getting closer to the poor and neglected, to change the narratives that allow fear and anger to impair judgement, to stay hopeful, and to be willing to take on tasks that are uncomfortable and inconvenient.

The ABA Medal is the highest award given by the association for exceptionally distinguished service by a lawyer or lawyers to the cause of American jurisprudence.
