Statement of ABA President Hilarie Bass Re: Standing up for justice and equality

WASHINGTON, Aug. 17, 2017 – The American Bar Association stands dedicated to the principles of equality and justice in our country and denounces those who attempt to subvert those values.

These concepts are more than mere words, they are the bedrock which support our democracy. The ABA has numerous policies supporting equality and nondiscrimination in the workplace, throughout the justice system and in society. In fact, one of the ABA’s four main goals is to “Eliminate Bias and Enhance Diversity.”

Our nation thrives when all, regardless of gender, race, religion or sexual orientation, are treated with respect and afforded the rights and dignity guaranteed by our Constitution. An inclusive society makes us all stronger.

The ABA believes it is our patriotic duty as Americans to stand up to bigotry, to speak out against hate, racism and anti-Semitism whenever and wherever it appears, and to support the rule of law. The ABA stands ready to declare loudly and clearly: American values of diversity, inclusion and equality will be celebrated and protected.

With more than 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is one of the largest voluntary professional membership organizations in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.
