Video highlights: Panelists square off on the Voting Rights Act

Issues surrounding Shelby County v. Holder spur spirited debate on whether protection for voters of color is still necessary, as 34 states enact voter-ID laws following the 2013 decision.

The program, “50 Years Later: Voting Rights in America,” was presented on Saturday, Aug. 1, at the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Panelists included:

  • U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.
  • Hans A. von Spakovsky, senior legal fellow, The Heritage Foundation
  • Thomas A. Saenz, president and general counsel, MALDEF
  • Andrea Zopp, former CEO and president, Chicago Urban League
