By John Glynn

The American Bar Association will present its Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts to those who have earned the organization’s highest honor for outstanding work that fosters the American public’s understanding of law. The awards will be given at a ceremony from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Award-winning writer, author and attorney Dahlia Lithwick, senior editor and legal correspondent for Slate will be the featured speaker at the awards ceremony. ABA President James R. Silkenat will present six Silver Gavels and three Honorable Mentions selected from 169 entries received in all eligible categories, which include books, commentary, documentaries, drama and literature, magazines, newspapers, radio, television and other media.

The association has presented these awards each year since 1958. The 18-member ABA Standing Committee on Gavel Awards, chaired by Cory M. Amron of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease in Washington, D.C., makes final award decisions.
