“They didn’t even let him take his teeth!” a woman cried to me about how quickly Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers had taken away her elderly husband. ICE had detained him in a surprise, early morning home raid days after his release from criminal custody. His wife barely understood what happened in criminal court and had no idea he could be deported as a green card holder. These are the types of calls that we frequently field at Immigrant Defense Project (IDP), an organization that helps people caught at the devastating intersection of the criminal legal and immigration systems.
