tyl in focus: sexual orientation and gender identity

To be nobody-but-yourself—in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else—means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.

E.E. Cummings

While some progress has been made, many challenges remain for the LGBT community. In this issue of TYL In Focus, we look at some of those challenges. This issue touches on LGBT health disparities, employment issues, and how to work with transgender clients. Nathan Cordle describes how the Obama Administration expanded the interpretation of Title IX, which prohibits sexual discrimination, to include “discrimination based on a student’s gender identity, including discrimination based on a student’s transgender status.” However, in 2017, the Trump Administration revoked this guidance.

Also in this issue, we present stories from two lawyers who describe what it was like to come out in the profession. This issue of TYL In Focus is a great addition to your digital library. (TYL In Focus: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Volume 4 Issue 6, Published August 2017, copyright American Bar Association.)
