tyl in focus: access to education

I believe that education is the single-most important civil rights issue that we face today.

Michelle Obama

Education is crucial to the success of the individual and to the success of the country. It is a fundamental right deserved by all citizens. A vast number of students do not have access to the classes and resources they need to build a foundation that will help them be successful adults. This issue of TYL In Focus discusses access to education, and the challenges faced by many without vital educational resources. Inside you will find an article on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act—a civil rights statute that provides disabled students a substantive right to a free and appropriate public education. In his article, Desmond Meade tells how education transformed his life for the better, but a prior felony conviction won’t allow him to use his hard-earned law degree. You will also find articles on racial inequality in public schools, the education of foster youth, school closings, and more. This edition of TYL In Focus is a great addition to your digital library. (TYL In Focus: Access to Education, Volume 4 Issue 4, Published April 2017, copyright American Bar Association.)
