About the On The Rise Award

The 2021 nomination process is now closed.  
The ABA’s "On the Rise – Top 40 Young Lawyers" Award program provides national recognition of ABA Young Lawyers Division members who exemplify a broad range of high achievement, innovation, vision, leadership, and service to the profession and their communities.

Nomination Process and Notification

  • The nominating process for the 2021 Award opened on December 1, 2020 with a deadline of March 1, 2021.
  • The list of 2020  honorees is available online.

Eligibility (2021 Award)

  • The Nominee is a lawyer member of the American Bar Association in good standing.
  • The Nominee is a licensed attorney in the United States or one of its territories.
  • On September 1, 2020, the Nominee was 36 years of age or younger; OR the Nominee received their first license within the last 5 years (2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, or 2016).
  • Past honorees are not eligible.
  • Self-nominating is allowed.

Nomination Information

  • The Selection Committee will not disclose the information outside of the closed selection process.  However, nominators are solely responsible for determining the types of information they are permitted to disclose to the Selection Committee.
  • Nominators are asked to provide a statement of why the Nominee merits this honor. Please provide examples of achievement in the practice of law, including excellence in advocacy, counseling, or litigation and community service/pro bono work.  We recommend drafting the statement in Word and then copying and pasting it into the nomination form (limit 10,000 characters including spaces).
  • Nominees will be sent a copy of their nomination and asked to submit additional information including a resume and ABA membership information.

Selection Committee

The selection committee comprises attorneys from various practicing settings.


National Recognition

On the Rise – Top 40 Young Lawyers Honorees will receive national recognition in ABA print publications, online and via social media.
