Isy India Thusi
Professor Thusi is an Associate Professor of Law at California Western School of Law, where she teaches Criminal Procedure, Critical Race Theory, and Regulation of Vice. She has worked for a number of human and civil rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union (National Legal Department), Human Rights Watch, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and The Opportunity Agenda.
She served as a law clerk to the Honorable Robert L. Carter on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York; the Honorable Damon J. Keith on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit; and Justice van der Westhuizen on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the country’s highest court.
She currently serves as a Co-Chair of the Academics Committee of the ABA Criminal Justice Section. She recently helped draft the Discussion Guide for the Kerry Washington play American Son, which examines race and policing in America. Among other awards, India received a W.E.B. Dubois Fellowship at Harvard University, the Andrew W. Mellon Doctoral Fellowship in the Humanities, and was named a Next Generation African Scholar by the Social Science Research Council. India received her Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and Law & Society and is licensed to practice law in New York. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the proud mother of three children.
