We're looking forward to seeing all of you at the 2019 YLD Spring Conference on Thursday! Before we see you in DC, here are a few things you might want to know.
Airport to Conference Hotel
In addition to where most of us will be staying, the conference hotel is where most of our programming will take place. The Marriott Washington Georgetown (1221 22nd Street NW) is in the epicenter of Georgetown, West End and Dupont Circle in Washington, DC.
It’s about a 20-minute drive or a half an hour ride on the metro from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Just take the Blue line from the Ronald Reagan station to the Foggy Bottom stop. Learn more about public transportation in DC here.
For most events, business casual attire is best. For the improv sessions, wear something you can move in. If you are attending An Evening at the US Library of Congress, Black Tie is optional.
They are predicting high 70s-high 80s for the conference with a chance of rain every day, so prepare accordingly.

This year we are helping My Sister’s Place, a women’s shelter in DC for our public service project. From 1:45-3:45pm we’ll be painting and assisting with other tasks around the shelter. One-on-one executive coaching sessions with Debra Forman will begin at 7:30am and end at 5:30pm. Didn’t get a chance to sign up? Stop by the registration & info desk and see if there are some slots left (this goes for political coaching and improv sessions as well!)
Are you planning on attending A View from the Hill at the US Capitol with special guests Senate Judiciary Chair Lindsey Graham and Congressman Joe Kennedy III? You’ll want to be in the building by 11:30am so lunch can be served and we can begin promptly at noon. If you registered for this program, your name has been submitted to the US Capitol Police. You are responsible for your own transportation to the Capitol. Make sure to bring your ID or you won’t be allowed in.
To make sure you're at the right place at the right time, enter the Capitol from the “South Door Entrance” off of Independence Ave. When inside the door, go through security and stop at the appointment desk and pick up a badge that indicates you are cleared to go to room HC-5. You will need to show I.D. From the appointment desk, walk straight down the main hall (statues will be on either side) then:
-Make a LEFT at second hallway (first hallway is right in front of security)
-Walk to end of this hallway and on the RIGHT there will be elevators
-Take elevators to BASEMENT LEVEL (B)
-After exiting the elevator, make a RIGHT (down ramp) and then another RIGHT into the next hallway
-HC-5 will be in front of you (there are steps in front of the door)
From 2:30-4:00pm we’ll tour the US Supreme Court with our Host, Supreme Court Clerk Scott Harris. We’ll meet in the lobby before the tour.
A note on Supreme Court etiquette
You'll want to enter through Court's public entrance and line up in the Great Hall outside the Courtroom no later than 2:45pm. The lecture will begin promptly at 3:00pm. There will be a security screening at your point of entry. With 180+ guests, screening may take several minutes. All items must be screened in x-ray machines and all visitors will be asked to pass through metal detectors.
Please tour the building quietly, as working offices are adjacent to public hallways. No photography or audio/video recording is allowed inside the Courtroom.Smoking is prohibited inside the building. Consumption of food and beverages is permitted only in the Cafeteria and vending machine alcove. Touching of portraits, busts, or other artifacts on exhibit is strictly prohibited.
Any visitors unable to maintain proper behavior will be asked to leave by the Supreme Court Police.
Upon the conclusion of the program, we will return to the conference hotel for our Opening Plenary Session at 5:30pm in Metropolitan Galleries 1-4. We will hear from Washington, DC Attorney General Karl Racine and US Congressman Joe Cunningham. The Congressman is a former Vice Chair of the ABA Law Student Division and was a leader in the ABA YLD before getting elected to Congress.
After our Dine-Arounds, we will end the day with a dessert reception in the West End room.
Improv sessions, executive coaching, and breakfast all start at 7:30am. You’ll want to make sure you’re ready for the fireside chat with Former US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales from 8:00-8:45am in the Metropolitan Galleries 1-4. The Democratic Political Consulting Sessions also begin at 8am in the Metropolitan Foyer.
Stay in the area for the 9:00am talk with David Lat, Editor At Large and Founding Editor of Above the Law, about the future of legal education and the 10:45am session with Carrie Budoff Brown, Editor of POLITICO to hear about the role of media.
Make sure you have your ticket for the Breaking Barriers Lunch. We’ll be joining Stephen K. Benjamin and Judge Diane Humetewa in the West End. We still have a few tickets left, check with the registration desk when you arrive. The rest in the afternoon is a mix of CLE sessions at the hotel as well as off-site events. Check the schedule for specifics.
However, you decide to spend your afternoon, make sure you’re back at the West End by 3:15pm for the International Oratory Competition & Reception.
At 7:00pm, we’ll join Law Librarian of Congress Linda Sanchez for an evening at the US Library of Congress of dinner and dancing. You are responsible for your own transportation.
Improv sessions and executive coaching will begin at 7:30am again but end at 3:30pm. The Bar Leadership Breakfast will also begin at 7:30am and all are welcome to join us in the West End. Don’t forget to stop by the ABF Meet-and-Greet
While a number of CLE sessions throughout the day will take place at the hotel, The Men of Color Summit will begin at 9:00am at Howard University School of Law in Houston Hall, Moot Court Room. Howard University is about a 20-minute drive from the conference hotel and a 25-minute ride on the red line metro from the Dupont Circle Station to Van Ness-UDC Station. Follow the exit to the right-hand side Connecticut Avenue. Follow Connecticut Avenue to Van Ness Street proceed left. Bank of America is on the corner. Follow Van Ness to the end of the street. On your way back to the hotel, you’ll be going right by the Smithsonian National Zoo. It couldn’t hurt to save a little time on Saturday afternoon to see the giant pandas!
We will end the conference with a closing session before sending you back to your communities to continue making a difference.
The Best Donuts in DC
You’re probably already doing your own research, but we’ve compiled a list of donut places the ABA YLD staff will be making an effort to sample. Let us know which one you liked best.
District Doughnut: only 20 minutes from the hotel by public transportation!
Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken: I guess this combination is an east coast trend?
Mama’s Donut Bites: they are in a bright pink truck that drives around DC. Let us know if you catch them. We want some mini apple cider donuts.
Donut Heaven: another food truck, but this one has huge stands with donuts on the front.
Sugar Shack Donuts & Coffee: only a 10-minute walk from Howard University (where the Men of Color Summit will be.)
Krispy Kreme: someone from our team CLAIMS Krispy Kreme is the best. We are hesitant, but we are willing to give the chain a chance.
