The American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (ABA YLD) is the home for young lawyers. With over 150,000 members and 300 affiliated groups, the ABA YLD is the largest young lawyer organization in the world.


The Division is committed to assuring it is best able to represent the newest members of the profession, ensuring that it reflects the society it serves, and providing young lawyers and young lawyer organizations with the tools and opportunities for professional and personal success. 

Individual membership is open to American Bar Association law student and lawyer Members under 36 years old or admitted to practice for five years or less. Affiliate membership is open to young lawyer organizations and special interest bars. There are no additional membership dues.

YLD Staff

Austin Groothuis
Director, Early Career Strategy

Austin provides strategy, budget, and staffing oversight for the Young Lawyers and Law Student Divisions.

Donna Nesbit
Director, Operations and Meetings

Donna oversees all planning of YLD in-person events, manages YLD budget, oversees day-to-day business operations, oversees sponsorship development and all aspects of Affiliate outreach including our Public Service Projects and affiliate programming. She also spearheads the Fellows efforts.

Sara Stretch
Director, Governance and Projects

Sara provides leadership, management, and strategic and procedural guidance to the Division's governing/policy bodies, member leaders, and staff  on matters involving governance, policy development and implementation, and special projects/initiatives.

Sylvia Knox
Senior Meeting Planner

Sylvia handles planning of YLD in-person events, manages programming and speaker communications; coordinates materials for YLD conferences; responsible for MCLE applications and post-conference activities and handles meeting registration and ticket sales questions.

Tracy Kaempf
Product Development Manager

Tracy develops and executes all YLD content and products, including webinars, distance learning, develops special interest young lawyer products and content opportunities, and manages and markets all existing & new YLD products, manages our TYL print publication, oversees our Member Service Projects, and develops content opportunities with LP & T partners, ABA Membership & Marketing and ABA entity partners.

Renee Lugo
Program Specialist

Renee provides support for YLD Committees and Liaisons; oversees YLD's Diversity initiatives, National Representative activities, the Diversity Scholars program, YLD Awards and Public Service Projects.

Alia Graham
Program Specialist

Alia manages and provides support to the Affiliates Assistance Team, Disaster Legal Services Team, District Representatives, Awards and Subgrants Team and works directly with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). She further manages and oversees the Regional Summit Subgrant Program, YLD Subgrant Program and the Awards of Achievement.

Asia Harris
Administrative Assistant

Asia assists the Director and Associate Director; handles office administration; Assists in reimbursement process; responds to general inquiries; provides governance support; oversees interns and temps.

Lindsay Cummings
TYL Editor

Lindsay manages content for the Young Lawyers Division, working with the TYL editorial board to produce TYL and After the Bar. She also helps manage Student Lawyer magazine for the Law Student Division.

Adam Music
Web Editor

Adam maintains the YLD website and works on the Division's social media profiles.

Matty Merritt
Membership Associate

Matty manages email communication (including newsletters) for the Young Lawyers Division and the Law Student Division. She also assists with the marketing of webinars, conferences, and other events on the website and social media.
