TIPS had a great Section Conference at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, California, from May 1 to 4, 2024. Thought leaders and experts of the legal industry gathered with over 250 TIPS leaders, members, sponsors, and guests for CLE sessions, networking events, committee meetings, and public service at the Section’s crown jewel event. The conference featured CLE programming with panels of industry leaders discussing a variety of issues, including the ethics of AI, storytelling at trial, challenges for in-house counsel, litigation skills, insurance coverage, and approaches to ADR. Panelists included companies and insurers including the Los Angeles Chargers, Travelers, Liberty Mutual Group, Tokio Marine/HCC, Nationwide, Tilia Claritas, Epic Insurance Brokers & Consultants, Concilio, Capital Group, HM Clause, and judges from numerous jurisdictions. In addition to the formal programming, attendees enjoyed the social and networking opportunities.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Samantha P. Jessner accepted the section’s Liberty Achievement Award for spending her career actively promoting diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. The following evening featured a swanky reception and dinner at Universal Studios where attendees were treated to special access and tours. Los Angeles lawyer James J.S. Holmes accepted the Edmund S. Muskie Pro Bono Service Award in recognition of his lifelong commitment to public service. The Women Trial Lawyers Committee sponsored a networking luncheon with keynote speaker Camille Vasquez, most recently known for her representation of actor Johnny Depp in his defamation trial. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit Hollenbeck Middle School to discuss the path to becoming lawyers with sixth graders in the “A Day in the Life of an Attorney” project.

Congratulations to TIPS Chair Loren Podwell and his stellar Spring Conference Co-Chairs Dave Becker, Chuck Eppolito, Pamela Palmer, and Jeff Price for planning this successful Section Conference, to our wonderful Section and Corporate Sponsors, and a special thanks to our great TIPS Staff led by Theresa Livingston for all of their hard work to make this another successful meeting for our TIPS members and guests. We look forward to continuing our work at the TIPS Fall Meeting on October 16-19, 2024, at the Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort!
