Meeting Round-Up: TIPS Fall Leadership Meeting in Wailea, Maui, Hawaii

By Christine Spinella Davis

The TIPS Fall Meeting was held on the Hawaiian island of Maui on October 16–19, 2019, at the magnificent Grand Wailea hotel, a Waldorf Astoria resort. In addition to productive business meetings and networking opportunities, TIPS members, many of whom brought family members along, took this opportunity to enjoy the idyllic location by spending time at the gorgeous beaches and hotel pools, taking in the stunning views on the walkways along the picturesque ocean cliffs, sightseeing, golfing, and doing early morning beach yoga. Many members drove on the scenic Hana and Pi’ilani Highways and some even made it to the summit of Haleakala volcano! Others visited local watering holes to enjoy delicious traditional Hawaiian fare and drink.

Thursday evening kicked off with a plenary session in which TIPS Chair Thea Capone and Michelle Powers of Elite Lawyer Coaching led a standing-room-only program on “Choosing Joy.” The TIPS Welcome Reception followed this uplifting session on the scenic grounds of the Grand Wailea. Friday was a meeting-free day, allowing TIPS members to take advantage of the beautiful and stunning island environs. After a productive working day of business meetings on Saturday, the conference wrapped up with a lively traditional Hawaiian luau on the lawn of the Grand Wailea, attended by many TIPS members, their families, and guests, who enjoyed the bountiful buffet and traditional entertainment by Hawaiian dancers and a flame-thrower.

TIPS sponsored two public service projects on Maui. On Thursday, members participated in a middle school outreach program with local students titled “A Day in the Life of an Attorney.” On Friday, the Law in Public Service Committee and the Animal Law Committee volunteered at the Leilani Farm Sanctuary in nearby Haiku, where, after discussing legal issues affecting farm animals, TIPS members worked with the animals and even assisted in cleaning the sanctuary’s barns.

Many thanks to TIPS Chair Thea Capone, TIPS’s staff, and all those who helped to make the Maui meeting one of the most successful and enjoyable yet. This year’s ABA Midyear Meeting will be in downtown Austin, Texas, with its lively music scene, where TIPS headquarters will be the JW Marriott Hotel from February 12–16. The big TIPS Section Conference will follow in Nashville. April 29–May 2, at that city’s new JW Marriott. We hope to see you soon!
