Meeting Round-Up: Fall Meeting in Amelia Island, Florida

By Christine S. Davis

Warm and sunny Amelia Island, Florida, was the site of TIPS’s 2018 Fall Meeting on October 10–13 at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton, a beachfront resort outside Jacksonville. In addition to many productive business meetings and networking opportunities, TIPS members took advantage of the beautiful setting and gorgeous weather by spending time at the beach and the pool, strolling around the island and the historic Amelia Island shopping district in Fernandina Beach, playing golf, and enjoying a game of kickball together on Friday afternoon. Many energetic and spirited TIPS members even participated in Denise’s Dash Fun Run/Walk early on Saturday morning.

TIPS members took part in two public service projects during the Fall Meeting. The TIPS Diversity, Staff Counsel, and Law in Public Service Committees joined forces to organize, sponsor, and lead a youth outreach program at Fernandina Middle School in nearby Fernandina Beach, titled “A Day in the Life of an Attorney.” Participating attorneys spent a rewarding morning discussing their professional experiences in the legal field and encouraging the students to explore the possibility of a law-related career. In addition, the Law in Public Service Committee partnered with Rise Against Hunger, a local nonprofit meal-packaging organization that provides dehydrated and high-protein nutritious meals to people in need. Meals packaged by volunteers are used to support education programs and help save lives in developing countries around the world.

The meeting was packed with fun social events, as well. A TIPS welcome reception on Thursday evening at the hotel was followed by committee dinners on Friday evening at some of the island’s numerous restaurants. TIPS hosted a fabulous poolside reception and dinner at the Ritz-Carlton on Saturday evening. While the company and food were both amazing on a spectacular autumn evening by the ocean, the night might not have been complete without TIPS members, including members of the new Leadership Academy class, singing karaoke and dancing together around the pool. Many TIPS members and guests ended the festivities by spending time with friends and colleagues by the hotel’s fire pit.

Special thanks go to TIPS Chair Roy Cohen, TIPS staff members, and all those who helped make the Amelia Island meeting a success. Following the ABA Midyear Meeting in January, our next Sectionwide meeting will be the TIPS Section Conference, May 1–5, in New York City at the Westin Times Square. A broad range of CLE programs and social events will be offered at the Section Conference. We hope to see you there.
