Fall Leadership Meeting on Maui

Over 240 TIPS leaders and staff met for a very successful and productive Fall Leadership Meeting in Wailea, Maui, Hawaii, at the Grand Wailea from October 16–19, 2019. TIPS officers, Council, general committees, standing committees, and task forces met for advanced planning for the new year. In addition, committee chairs and vice-chairs convened for specialized training sessions.

The TIPS Law in Public Service Committee and the Animal Law Committee held a public service project at Leilani Farm Sanctuary in Haiku, Hawaii, on Friday, October 18, 2019. Volunteers toured the sanctuary, heard a brief presentation about legal issues affecting farmed animals, fed and groomed animals, and gardened and cleaned the sanctuary grounds. Leilani Farm Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary, educational center, and rescue for animals that were destined for slaughter or orphaned by hunting. Farm residents include goats, pigs, chickens, deer, donkeys, cows, rabbits, ducks, and geese.

At the TIPS plenary on October 17, Joan Schaffner, associate professor of law at the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., received the Andrew C. Hecker Memorial Award for her exemplary leadership to the Section. During TIPS’s gala Hawaiian luau on the Grand Wailea lawn on the concluding evening of the meeting, Mike Beaver of Colorado received the James K. Carroll Leadership Award recognizing Mike’s tremendous leadership and service to the Section.

TIPS CLE: Aviation and Space Law, Fidelity and Surety Law

The Aviation and Space Law Committee held its annual CLE conference, “The Aviation Lawyer’s Operating Handbook: Learning to Litigate, Navigate, and Communicate,” on October 24-25, 2019, at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C. Topics included recent developments in aviation and space law, overcoming procedural obstacles and applying foreign law in aviation cases, handling expert witnesses, and effective mediation strategies.

In November, attendees participated in the Fidelity and Surety Law Committee’s fall fidelity CLE, “How to Handle the Fidelity Bond Claim,” held November 6–8, 2019, at the Hilton Boston Back Bay. This conference coincided with the third-edition book release of Handling Fidelity Bond Claims, an ABA/TIPS book. Attendees heard from some of the greatest minds in the industry as they discussed their methodologies and experiences handling both simple and complex fidelity bond claims. This conference coincided with the Fidelity Law Association Meeting, which was held at the same hotel.
