The TIPS Law in Public Service Committee and the Animal Law Committee held a public service project at Leilani Farm Sanctuary in Haiku, Hawaii, on Friday, October 18, 2019. Volunteers toured the sanctuary, heard a brief presentation about legal issues affecting farmed animals, fed and groomed animals, and gardened and cleaned the sanctuary grounds. Leilani Farm Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary, educational center, and rescue for animals that were destined for slaughter or orphaned by hunting. Farm residents include goats, pigs, chickens, deer, donkeys, cows, rabbits, ducks, and geese.
At the TIPS plenary on October 17, Joan Schaffner, associate professor of law at the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., received the Andrew C. Hecker Memorial Award for her exemplary leadership to the Section. During TIPS’s gala Hawaiian luau on the Grand Wailea lawn on the concluding evening of the meeting, Mike Beaver of Colorado received the James K. Carroll Leadership Award recognizing Mike’s tremendous leadership and service to the Section.
TIPS CLE: Aviation and Space Law, Fidelity and Surety Law
The Aviation and Space Law Committee held its annual CLE conference, “The Aviation Lawyer’s Operating Handbook: Learning to Litigate, Navigate, and Communicate,” on October 24-25, 2019, at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C. Topics included recent developments in aviation and space law, overcoming procedural obstacles and applying foreign law in aviation cases, handling expert witnesses, and effective mediation strategies.
In November, attendees participated in the Fidelity and Surety Law Committee’s fall fidelity CLE, “How to Handle the Fidelity Bond Claim,” held November 6–8, 2019, at the Hilton Boston Back Bay. This conference coincided with the third-edition book release of Handling Fidelity Bond Claims, an ABA/TIPS book. Attendees heard from some of the greatest minds in the industry as they discussed their methodologies and experiences handling both simple and complex fidelity bond claims. This conference coincided with the Fidelity Law Association Meeting, which was held at the same hotel.
The Brief Managing Editor Transition
With this issue, TIPS bids farewell and good retirement wishes to Jane Harper-Alport of ABA Publishing/Periodicals, a lawyer and TIPS member who has been the managing editor of The Brief and TortSource, as well as other ABA periodicals, since 2004. Beginning with the Spring 2020 issue of the magazine, Melissa Vasich of the ABA Publishing/Periodicals staff will become the managing editor as she adds The Brief to her periodicals portfolio. TIPS welcomes Melissa, and thanks Jane for her service to TIPS publications. Her colleagues are glad that Jane will continue her TIPS membership as she transitions into her next chapter.
