AJ Albrecht: Chair 2020-2021

AJ is the US Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Mercy For Animals, where she oversees the organization’s legislative and regulatory agenda at the federal, state, and local levels of US government. She joined the organization in July of 2019 and brought with her a deep understanding of animal advocacy and legislative policy work.

Licensed to practice law in New Jersey and New York, AJ is the 2020-2021 Chair of the American Bar Association’s Animal Law Committee, a past Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Animal Law Committee, and the 2017 recipient of the New Jersey Young Lawyers Division’s Service to the Community Award. Prior to joining MFA, AJ was a legislative attorney with Best Friends Animal Society, where she lobbied for legislative and policy changes protecting companion animals at both the state and local level. Before that, AJ litigated complex family law matters in private practice for five years at a boutique law firm in Summit, New Jersey. AJ’s unique background of combined litigation and policy experience has allowed her to be a pragmatic yet zealous advocate for animals.

In addition to her professional work, AJ is the founder of the East Orange Animal Alliance, a volunteer-run nonprofit that supports the City of East Orange in effectively caring for its at-risk animals and the people who are dedicated to them. AJ shares her home in San Diego with her husband, two rescued pit bulls, and a continuous procession of foster dogs.
