ABA Tax Times Spring 2025

New Tax Times, New Opportunities

Jessica L. Jeane

Summary

  • Returning from hiatus, ABA Tax Times is relaunching with Jessica Jeane as its Supervising Editor.
  • The new format, which will publish articles on a rolling basis, allows articles to be more reactive to current events and allows authors a quicker publishing timeline.
  • A new manuscript submission portal is also available, which streamlines the process.
  • A session reporter program will be piloted at the upcoming May Tax Meeting in Washington, DC. Write-ups from meeting panels will appear in ATT. We look to expand the program at future meetings.

As members may have noticed, ABA Tax Times (ATT) has been on hiatus since last summer. While the Tax Section has been going through a careful reexamination of its ongoing projects, we have also been working towards building out a new plan for ATT moving forward. I am excited to be taking on the role of supervising editor and look forward to working with many of you in revamping the publication.

Of course, I would be remiss not to recognize the incredible work of Linda Beale, who helmed ATT for nearly a decade. On top of her year-round efforts to solicit and edit articles, she helped to successfully rebrand the publication from NewsQuarterly to its current online-only format as ABA Tax Times. The Tax Section and I will be continually grateful for her dedication to ATT.

In relaunching ATT, our main goal was to make it more responsive to current events and more attractive to potential authors. To wit, ATT now embraces a more article-centric, digital-first publishing approach. We still plan to release a complete issue each quarter, but authors will no longer have to wait to see their article published.  As soon as an article is accepted and edited, we plan to publish it on the Tax Section’s ATT webpage and announce its posting via email with current subscribers. This will enable us to react much more quickly to current events and hot topics as well as more timely communicate important information with members. I encourage all members to take this opportunity to consider topics that you are passionate about or you think are especially important and consider writing for ATT.

To that end, we have set up a new submission portal. Potential authors can submit completed manuscripts through this portal. New submissions will be reviewed and considered on a year-round, rolling basis. I encourage anyone with questions about writing for ATT or potential topics to reach out to me directly at [email protected].

Before I sign off today, I want to highlight a new initiative that we are hoping to grow. Beginning with the upcoming May Tax Meeting in Washington, D.C., a few committees will be helping to implement a new session reporter program. These reporters will attend some of the panels that take place at the meeting and produce a brief article covering the session’s content that will run in ATT. This is a great way for committee sessions to reach an audience beyond the in-person meeting and is also an opportunity to foster participation from young and new committee members. If your committee is interested in participating in future meetings, please reach out to me.

That’s all for now. Many thanks to our Publications Committee and Section leadership for their support with the ATT relaunch. And, of course, thank you to all the members and contributors who have helped create a solid foundation for this publication along the way.

Here’s to the dawn of a new day for ATT and new opportunities! I look forward to collaborating with you.

Till then,

Jessica
