From the ABA Tax Section and Center for Taxpayer Right. This webinar is meant for pro bono practitioners and others who work with survivors of domestic violence to resolve tax disputes. These cases can be particularly complicated given the complex rules around joint tax liability for spouses and inability to access shared financial records. A panelist from the National Network to End Domestic Violence will describe the cycle of violence, and discuss issues with working with survivors, and why financial need is a major reason survivors return to their abusers, hence the importance of tax benefits to give them a fresh start. Nancy Rossner of the Community Tax Law Project will talk about important tax considerations for survivors of domestic violence. The panelists will then discuss case studies of tax clients who are also survivors of domestic violence. They will start with a simple case and add in complicating factors. Panelists will share screen shots of IRS math error notices and the Statutory Notice of Deficiency throughout the case studies. They will also share simple forms that the taxpayer could use to prove eligibility for various tax credits, including a template letter from a medical provider or school official.
