Tax Law and Politics

Robert S. Steinberg

(To the tune of Hooray for Hollywood by Richard A. Whiting and Johnny Mercer (1937), sung by Nancy Sinatra or the Village Pops Chorus (2017) or performed by the Boston Pops.)

You know that politics
Can make a mess of any tax law fix.
When you have politics and tax law mating,
The legislating’s like throwing bricks.
The House may pen it, but in the Senate
McConnell purses his scornful lips.

And only lunatics
Would base tax policy on politics.
For taxes are an engine economic
And it’s moronic to ever mix
Two elements that don’t mix well, will lead you straight to hell—
Tax law and politics.

But if you’re filthy rich,
You wait for politics to ply her tricks;
Avert a bracket that is retribution,
Redistribution, what gives you kicks.
When you donate a buck, you guarantee good luck.
Tax law and politics!
