Update: 2020 May Tax Meeting

It is with great regret that the ABA and the Section of Taxation (“Section”) have decided to CANCEL the in-person 2020 May Tax Meeting scheduled for April 30-May 2 in Washington, D.C.

Recent events, including the guidance issued by the CDC, the declaration of a public health emergency in Washington, D.C., the WHO declaration of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak as a pandemic, the growing number of law firms, corporations, and governmental agencies limiting or prohibiting travel, uncertainty caused by the U.S. government’s ban on travel from Europe to the U.S., the closing of restaurants, theaters and bars, and the numerous recommendations by other public health organizations against holding large group meetings, make it clear that going forward with the Spring Meeting would be unreasonable and likely impossible.

An enormous amount of preparation has gone into planning this year’s program, but it is imperative that we prioritize the health and well-being of our members and guests. Nevertheless, plans are underway to try and present a meaningful amount of the programs to our audience on a virtual basis over the next 2-5 months. The Section is investigating various delivery options, and we will communicate more information in the future as our plans solidify. Moreover, the Section will shortly provide more information to you regarding refunds of registration fees.

Update: 2020 ABA/IPT Advanced Tax Seminars (IPT)

As the result of restrictions on travel placed on a significant number of speakers and attendees by their employers due to the Covid-19 virus situation, the ABA Section of Taxation and Institute for Professionals in Taxation, have cancelled the 2020 Advanced Tax Seminars, scheduled for March 16-20 in New Orleans, LA.

We are exploring options and will update attendees if the seminars are able to be rescheduled later in 2020.

The decision to cancel (or possibly postpone) these seminars was difficult, but the personal well-being of our members and program guests is the highest priority for both organizations.

A full refund of your registration fee will be credited to you within the next two weeks using your original form of payment. For questions, please contact Lina Kang at Lina.Kang@americanbar.org or call the ABA Tax Section at (202) 662-8670.

Please note that hotel and airline reservations must be cancelled by the individual who booked the reservation.  We understand the Royal Sonesta Hotel requires cancellation 72 hours in advance of your arrival.

We appreciate your understanding, and we look forward to seeing everyone in the near future.

Update: 20th Annual U.S. and Europe Tax Practice Trends Conference

As the result of restrictions on travel placed on a significant number of speakers and attendees by their employers, the ABA Section of Taxation, IBA Taxes Committee and IFA-USA Branch have cancelled the 20th Annual U.S. and Europe Tax Practice Trends Conference scheduled for 1-3 April 2020 in Munich, Germany. The cosponsoring organizations have modified their cancellation policy for this event, and no penalties will be applied. Cancellations for the Conference will automatically be processed. Registration fees will be credited to you within the next two weeks using your original form of payment. For questions, please contact Chris Tank at chris.tank@americanbar.org or call the ABA Tax Section at (202) 662-8670.

Please note that hotel and airline reservations must be cancelled by the individual who booked the reservation.

We appreciate the understanding of those who had registered for this conference, and we look forward to seeing everyone in person at next year’s Conference at The Dolder Grand in Zurich, Switzerland on 24-26 March 2021.

Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Upcoming ABA Tax Section Meetings

The ABA Section of Taxation takes the health and safety of our meeting attendees and staff seriously. While the decision to attend a meeting is personal and based on various factors and consultation with medical professionals when appropriate, the ABA and the Section of Taxation are monitoring a variety of sources, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization, U.S. state and local health authorities, and, when appropriate, public health authorities in other nations, for the latest updates.

As more is learned regarding the current conditions in a meeting location, the ABA Section of Taxation will share information, make decisions, and update this statement regarding whether a meeting will occur. The ABA has also issued a general statement on Coronavirus, available here. View each meeting listing below for the latest status update!
