About the Committee
The Real Estate Committee addresses a broad area of tax law as it relates to the acquisition, subdivision, construction, ownership, financing, and disposition of real estate (as well as the tax aspects of the different types of entities that may own real estate including real estate investment trusts, partnerships, etc.).
Because the real estate industry transcends any single area of tax law, the Committee works closely with the Partnerships and LLCs Committee, the Sales, Exchange and Basis Committee, and others. In addition to its regular three hour meeting at each Tax Section meeting, the Committee helps to organize and participates in: (1) an informal dinner on Thursday evening that is jointly sponsored with the Partnerships and LLCs Committee, (2) a joint luncheon program on Friday with the Partnerships and LLCs Committee and the Individual Income Tax Committee, and (3) a joint “shop talk” breakfast on Saturday with the Partnerships and LLCs Committee and the S Corporations Committee. Members and former members of the Real Estate Committee and the Partnerships and LLCs Committee attend meetings with representatives of the IRS, Treasury, and the professional staffs of the Joint Committee on Taxation, House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee to discuss topics of interest in conjunction with each year’s May Meeting.
