The 2024-2025 Law Student Tax Challenge (LSTC) is an annual competition sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the Tax Section. Students compete in teams of two in either the J.D. or LL.M. division to draft a memorandum and client letter analyzing a complex tax problem. The top six (6) J.D. teams and the top four (4) LL.M. teams advance to the oral competition round, where they present their analyses before a panel of 3-5 judges who will act as “senior partners” or “clients”. The competition is held annually in-person at the Tax Section’s Midyear Meeting.

Volunteers are needed for Oral Round Timers, and Oral Round Judges. Oral Round volunteers must be available on Thursday, February 20 for the competition. Submit your volunteer application by Monday, January 27 to participate. Please contact Genevieve Borello at [email protected] with any questions.

Available Volunteer Positions

  • Oral Round Judges (approximately 12-15) – Oral Round Judges will participate on panels of 3-4 judges and will evaluate the law students’ oral defense of their findings.  Previous experience as a judge (LSTC or in professional capacity) or as a tax controversy litigator is extremely preferred.  Oral Rounds will be provided a bench brief addressing the issues prior to the Oral Round.
    • Anticipated time commitment – reviewing the bench brief:  1-2 hours
    • Anticipated time commitment – judging the competition at the Midyear Meeting: 3-4 hours
  • Oral Round Timers (4-6) – Oral Round Timers work with the Oral Round Judges and Day-of Chair(s) to provide the official time for each team. We ask that each Oral Round Timer stay for all 3-4 teams presenting before each Oral Round Judging Panel to ensure consistent treatment for each team. The competition lasts approximately 3 hours, and there are both morning and afternoon slots. NOTE: Attendance at the Midyear Meeting is required.
    • Anticipated time commitment: 3-5 hours

*All anticipated time commitments are based on time commitments in prior years. Additional (or less) time may be required for the current year.
