Welcome to spring and planning for the 2017–2018 bar year that begins in mid-August. Ours is a small section, and we function along democratic principles reminiscent of a New England town meeting where everyone has a voice. The Nominating Committee has been appointed. We are looking for leadership for committees, which are the strength of our Section. Please also send member news—you won an award, got married, ran the New York Marathon, chaired a successful initiative. We are thinking of starting a column of interesting cases our members are currently working on—but you need to tell us! And if there is a topic you want to learn more about, in an article or a webinar, let us know.

Our Chair’s column elaborates on live conference programs past, present, future, and ongoing phone and online programs for committee members. We salute Ben Griffith and Sorell Negro, for their new roles in the World Jurist Association, and Dwight Merriam, who was recently awarded the John Eldred Shields Distinguished Professional Service Award by the Connecticut Bar Association. Ron Cope’s book, The Zoning and Land Use Handbook, is our most recent Section publication. We excerpt a chapter and hope it will entice you to buy this excellent and user-friendly handbook. We reprint an article from the New York State Bar News about the unauthorized dissemination of private photos on social media. And of course, saving the best for last, we have Sophie Stadnyk’s column on the current U.S. Supreme Court term.
