Shown above are the newly admitted lawyers, their guests, Senior Lawyers Division Chair Marvin S.C. Dang (front row, center) who was the movant during the admission ceremony, and Charles Collier (two to the right of Marvin) who has chaired the US Supreme Court Trip Committee for 10 years.
The new admittees joined the ABA Senior Lawyer’s Division’s annual U.S. Supreme Court Bar admissions trip which took place on June 2-3, 2019.
On Sunday June 2, 2019, the admittees and their guests gathered for an orientation session led by Los Angeles lawyer and former SLD Chair, Charles (Chuck) Collier and current SLD Chair Marvin S.C. Dang. They discussed the rules and procedures for the swearing-in ceremony and role of the movant, played this year by Marvin Dang. Special guest Stephen A. Saltzburg, Wallace and Beverley Woodbury University Professor, George Washington University School of Law, discussed pending SCOTUS cases. After dinner, the group enjoyed watching the recent documentary, RBG.
On Monday, June 3, 2019, Chief Justice John Roberts presided when the Court convened at 10:00 a.m. Four decisions were announced. After Marvin Dang's motion as movant was approved, the new admittees took the oath of admission. At a reception following the ceremony, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg met the admittees and their guests, congratulating them and answering questions on a range of topics.
After the reception in the Court house half the group went on a private tour of the Law Library of Congress and half went to a lecture given by Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, hosted by the Supreme Court Historical Society.
The ABA Senior Lawyers Division has sponsored an admission trip to the Supreme Court for about 20 years and several hundred have participated. The 2020 trip will be held June 7-8 and registration typically opens in January or early February of the same year.
