The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Scam Prevention

ABA SLD Elder Abuse Prevention Committee

A recent CFPB blog post shares tips for avoiding scams during a natural disaster or health emergency, like COVID-19. During a disaster, scammers will leverage empathy or fear, pushing donations to fake charities or selling sham cures or treatments. Protect yourself and your loved ones by spreading awareness, protecting your personal information, and staying vigilant when anyone requests money by wire transfer, gift cards, or a mobile payment app.

Download or order free copies of the CFPB’s handouts, posters, bookmarks, and placemats with visually appealing and easy to read scam prevention resources.

If you or someone you know has been the target of a scam, make a report to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ftc.gov/complaint or by calling 1-800-FTC-HELP

The SLD Elder Abuse Prevention Committee looks to educate the legal community on the problem of elder abuse and advocate for its victims. The committee efforts include preventing scams and financial exploitation. The group has compiled a list of resources in each state where elder abuse can be reported.  Participate in Elder Abuse Prevention Community.
