Senior Lawyers in Washington for Spring Meeting

By Albert C. Harvey

This year, for the first time, the Senior Lawyers Division will hold it’s spring meeting in Washington, D.C., April 21-23, 2020.  Several activities will be available for Senior Lawyers.  First, the Division is joining with the leadership of the American Bar Association to participate in ABA Day.  Beginning Tuesday April 21, 2020, members of the Division will meet with representatives of state bar associations.  For most of the next two days, the delegations will visit the members of Congress from their state to advocate for some of the issues important to lawyers and the communities they serve.  Some of the subjects of to be presented to the members include access to legal services and funding for legal aid, immigration reform, support for veterans including access to legal support, and support of national security and civil liberties legislation.  The state delegations will be working with the ABA Governmental Affairs Division in selecting the specific issues to discuss with the members of the House of Representatives and Senate.

The Division will have a dinner on Wednesday evening to celebrate the work of the Division and to present its most prestigious award, the John H. Pickering Award.  The Pickering Award annually recognizes a member of the legal profession for their legal work, Pro Bono service, dedication to the equal justice for all, and promotion of the highest standards of ethics and professionalism in the law.  The award is named for John H. Pickering, a distinguished Washington lawyer who chaired the Senior Lawyers Division and was a long-time member of the House of Delegates.  He was also a founding member of the prestigious Washington law firm, Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering (which is now WilmerHale). This year, we honor Steven A. Reiss, former partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.  Mr. Reiss has received the award for his impressive dedication to pro bono work and access to justice.

On Thursday of the meeting, various committees of the Division will meet.  A program on National Security Law will be presented.  The Council will hold its business meeting that afternoon.

All members of the Division are welcome at the spring meeting.  Information on housing, meetings, receptions, and the Pickering dinner are available on the Divisions website or by contacting the executive director, at  Emily.Roschek@americanbar.org

Respectfully,

Al Harvey, Chair Senior Lawyers Division
