United Nations and the Elderly Program

By Robert Lutz

On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, the International Committee of SLD is presenting another interesting and timely program as part of its regular monthly meeting series featuring experts in their respective fields.  At its meeting at 11:30am-12:30pm ET, the meeting will explore the topic of “The United Nations and the Elderly: Time for a Convention?” with Professor William Mock, Professor of Law at the University of Illinois, Chicago-John Marshall Law School, current SLD Executive Committee member and former chair of the Chicago and Illinois Bar Associations’ International Law Committees .

Prof. Mock represents the ABA at the UN’s Open-Ended Working Group on Aging (OEWGA), which is debating whether to draft and adopt a new global human rights treaty for older persons.  Such a UN treaty would join the 1981 Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, the 1990 Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the 2008 Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as global treaties designed to protect the human rights of specific groups of peoples.
