National Aging and Law Conference

By David Godfrey

October 31- November 1, 2019
Marriott Crystal Gateway
Arlington, Virginia

The theme of the 2019 National Aging and Law Conference is Empowerment. Empowerment is about the work that lawyers do to empower clients as they age to receive income and benefits they have earned and to be in control of their lives; empowerment is about what we do to assure that every client has equal access to the legal system; empowerment is the essence of being a lawyer; empowerment is the core of what the ABA stands for.

The 2019 National Aging and Law Conference features four plenary sessions on Elder Justice, Ethics, the future of legal assistance for older persons, and the ever-popular Lightning Round plenary featuring 10 speakers with up to five minutes each, charged with “Wowing” the audience on an important or emerging issue. There are 30 workshops to select from, covering Medicare, Medicaid, long term care, elder abuse, guardianship reform, decision making, consumer law, client counseling, legal service development and delivery. Most of the agenda is developed through an open call for proposals process that assures a balance of issues and a blend of proven experts and emerging voices in the field of law and aging. The factor that sets National Aging and Law Conference apart from the many estate planning and elder law conferences is a balance of programming on issues that impact clients across the income spectrum.

The venue is one subway stop from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport; the Marriott Crystal Gateway provides complementary shuttle service to and from the airport. The hotel recently completed a top to bottom renovation. The group rate of just $179 a night plus tax is an excellent value for the DC metropolitan area. Rooms at this rate are limited and will sell out.

The conference agenda and registration details can be found at https://www.americanbar.org/content/dam/aba/administrative/law_aging/nalc-2019-registration-brochure.pdf

Early registration runs through August 24th, with the discounted rate for Senior Lawyer’s Division Members at just $485. Registration includes CLE credits, lunch both days, breakfast on Friday, and an opening reception on Thursday evening.

A pre-Conference intensive on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will be held on Wednesday October 30, 2019. SSI is a vital benefit for older adults and persons with disabilities, a part of the “social safety net.” The pre-conference will cover overpayments, appeals, waivers, in-kind support, special needs trusts and ABLE accounts and responding to terminations and disability reviews. Registration for the pre-conference is $125, and includes CLE, lunch and breaks. Registration is available at https://www.americanbar.org/events-cle/
